Media Center News

young-girl-studying.jpgDear parents and students,
I am creating a new bulletin board in the library but I need your help.  I need photos of YOU reading!! Any place you can think of to read, alone or in a group will be welcome.  Just bring them to me in the library or put them in my school mailbox.
I'm so excited to see what we get!
Thank you and Happy Reading, Mrs. Coomes

Do The Right Thing

MARCH 2014

Anna Blanco: 5th Grade, Ms. Smith
Anna heard that a student at Vineland was sick and in the hospital.  Although she does not know this student, she made the little girl a Rainbow Loom friendship bracelet and gave a get well card.  The little girl was so excited to get the attention from an older student at her school.  She has been wearing the bracelet every day since.  Anna's actions show how far the kindness of strangers can go.  Vineland is fortunate to have such a thoughtful young lady!

Andrew Johnson: 5th Grade, Ms. Smith
Andrew is a phenomenal Fifth grade student.  He is always punctual and well-prepared for class.  He is extremely polite and well-mannered.  He is our class door holder and takes his job very seriously by never forgetting to open and close the door not only for his classmates but for other students in our school. Andrew always has a positive attitude and is willing to assist other students whenever they need help.

Elizabeth Polster: 6th Grade, Ms. Casanova
Elizabeth is a 6th grader, and she took it upon herself to assist a 4th grader who has the same PE time as she does. A former Peer Mediator, she tried to mediate the situation and hear both sides of the conflict. When she felt that it was too serious for her to solve, she reached out to the School Counselor. Elizabeth is the definition of an "upstander" - someone who stands up for situations that she feels are wrong and hurtful. I am so proud of her and feel that she deserves this Do the Right Thing award.

5th Grade Service Projects

Dear Vineland Family,

As part of our Cambridge International Programme, looking at societal issues is critical in our instruction.  As you know, with your help, the Fifth Grade Team has been working on two service projects that tackle hunger: and Feed Miami.  Following are some updates:

FREERICE.COM - Please continue to log in and play!  Such an easy way to help others.  Together, we have donated over 60,000 grains of rice!!!  Ask your teacher how you can get started if you haven't done so already!

FEED MIAMI -  The summer months are a critical time for food pantries in our community.  Schools are closed and food is not available to needy families who count on their children being fed at school.  Please help us with our food drive going on from now until the end of the school year.  Donation collection bags are in your child's classroom.  Together, we have already collected over 200 food items and have donated over 160 meals to other pantries through our Boosterthon Fun Run!

Thanks again for supporting us in our projects to tackle hunger, both in our community and world-wide.
